Dear Families,

It must be spring with all of these warm days, but I know it hasn’t changed officially!  The weather has been very warm this week and it looks like next week will be as well.  I work hard to keep their jackets in the classroom or in backpacks, but if you are missing a jacket or two, there is a growing pile in the lost and found by our classroom.  I do send children to look there, but adult eyes are often best.
Monday is the last day to put in per problem pledges for the Mathathon.  This is a huge fundraiser for the school and helps the FFO do fantastic things for the children.  The students will take the Mathathon test on Tuesday.  You can do flat pledges until March 20th.  All money needs to be in by that date.
This week was another busy week.  Hopefully you heard about lots of interesting topics that the children discussed during Science Day yesterday.  They saw presentations on Astronomy, Geology and had an Awesome Air Storytime.  Thanks to the FFO for planning such wonderful experiences for the school!  In Math, we continued to talk about numbers including counting by twos, fours, fives, fractions, time (1/2 hour), and problem solving.  It is amazing the progress that they are making in all of these topics.  In reading, we continued to talk about parts of a non-fiction book.  We also practiced how to take information from a book and put it in our own words.  These skills will help us as we start researching for our animal projects over the next couple of weeks.  In science, along with continuing to learn about classification, we looked at how to work in groups and what it means to be a group member in a project.  We had library today because of Science Day yesterday.  Today we also had a special visit from author and illustrator, Deborah Hopkinson, as part of Love of Reading Month.  So many exciting experiences to make this a great week in first grade.
Next week Thursday is a regular day getting out at 3 pm, while Friday the children finish school at 11:30 am for conferences.  If you would like a conference time, please let me know.  Also, we are still looking for volunteers for our Robotics times on Fridays April 14, 21, 28 and May 5 from 9:20 to 10:20.  Please let me know if you are available to help out.

          Have a great weekend!
