Dear Families,
The
Reid Park Zoo came out to Sunrise Drive today to speak with the children about
animal life cycles and habitats. This
finished off the first week of our new unit on animals and their life
cycles. This week we talked about
classifying animals. Over the next
couple of weeks the children will research about a specific animal and create a
way to teach about the animal and its life cycle to kindergarteners (and
you). This will be a group project done
in class. Along with learning how to research, they will also learn how to work
collaboratively. In writing, we are
supporting this effort by learning about the parts of a non-fiction book and
how to write a non-fiction book with a table of contents. In reading, we are looking at non-fiction
books, continuing to ask questions as we read, but also talking about how to
rephrase what we have read in our own words.
All of these skills will support our science unit as well as skills the
children will need in the future. In
Math, we continue to review fractions, time and will discuss number sense of
numbers over 50. We are also looking at
concepts like 10 more, 10 less than a
number and how many 10’s and 1’s are in a number.
This
week also finished up Steppers. We had a
KIVA on Thursday to celebrate the children and if your child walked more than 2
miles, there is a certificate in their folder today. Today, we also have a fun run! Steppers is a great program that Mrs. Dover
organizes for the school!!
Here are a
couple of reminders. First, in your
child’s folders are the summer catalogs.
We did not have library on Thursday because Mrs. Kupper was ill. We will have library again next week. Here are the dates we will have
Robotics: Fridays - April 14, 21, 28, May 5
from 9:20 to 10:20. If you are
interested in volunteering, please send me an email. Next week is a normal week, then we
have 4 regular days and a half day on Friday for conferences. Report cards are available at some point
today.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Berk
